Christmas Gifts: Near and Far

Countries that for centuries were not familiar with Christian customs now accept Christmas decorations, gifts, and set dinners at five-star hotels, with little deliberation and next to no qualms. It seems that kitsch goodies and materialism are more effective than fire and brimstone. And now girlfriends, wives and mothers, not to mention business partners the whole world over expect to see something from you under their Christmas tree – but what to buy?

Generally speaking, the safest gifts are vouchers for a spa or massage, or gym membership. A box of Belgian chocolates — perhaps Leonidas — is good for business associates. However, the tasteful way to reject consumption and unnecessary waste remains giving a gift to a choice charity in the name of the recipient. Such a gift might have the added benefit of serving to educate those new to Christmas about the original spirit of the Holiday.
