Just outside Hohhot, in Inner Mongolia, is a place billed as the United Nations of dairy farms – although “farm” hardly seems the right term for this high-tech showcase.
The nearly 600 hectare site has capacity for 10,000 cows, all selectively bred in vitro to produce as much milk as possible. Surrounding fields provide cattle with forage from 12 different countries, giving them a high-protein diet, and allowing each cow to produce eight to 10 tons of milk annually. The event brought together global leaders from government and business and focused on China’s growing importance to the world economy. It is this economic integration and China’s increasing modernization that should ensure China’s dairy sector remains hot for the foreseeable future, with Mengniu building on its past successes. But much depends on how the current crisis plays out.
