Passionate about Politics

March 21, 2008 – 2:02 pm

My Taiwanese friend who used to be based in Shanghai came up from Hong Kong, where she is now living, to visit me recently. She told me last night that all her Taiwanese friends in town are heading back to Taiwan for the vote this Saturday.

“Wait, do they go back JUST to vote?”
“Yes of course! Some people took chartered flights organized by Guomindang supporters to go back to Taiwan.”
“I guess they will all vote for the Guomindang?”
“Sure. Most Taiwanese on the Chinese mainland are businesspeople and they absolutely love the policies of Guomindang.”
“How about you?”
“Me? Haha. I am quite neutral. This time I like neither of the parties, but I dislike [KMT candidate] Ma Ying-jeou less, so I would vote for Ma if I were in Taiwan this Saturday. The place I live right now has no satellite TV and my friends are all back home, and so I need to find someone’s who has cable so I can watch the election and party for the whole day!”
“I didn’t know you guys were so passionate about politics.”
“Oh yes we are. When people know they might be able to change or influence something, they will be very enthusiastic.”
